Giovanni Battista Castello il Genovese, miniatore: l’apprendistato nell’arte degli orefici e l’attività di gioielliere

Questo articolo si propone di ricostruire, attraverso documenti inediti, l’apprendistato nell’arte degli orefici del miniatore Giovanni Battista Castello il Genovese (1549-1639), una formazione altrimenti nota solo da fonti della letteratura artistica. Inoltre questo studio getta nuova luce sulla professione di orefice specializzato nella manifattura di gioielli dell’artista, analizzata nel contesto delle botteghe di orefici e argentieri attive a Genova nella seconda metà del Cinquecento.

This paper aims to reconstruct, through unpublished documents, the apprenticeship in the art of goldsmiths of the miniaturist Giovanni Battista Castello il Genovese (1549-1639), a training otherwise known only from sources of art literature. Furthermore, this study sheds new light on the artist’s work as a goldsmith specialized in the manufacture of jewels, analyzed in the context of the goldsmith and silversmith workshops active in Genoa in the second half of the 16th century.
